For the past three years, I have been hit over the head during my Master’s program to build an internet fan base. “Make a website where your whole life can be boiled down for the masses. Do this while you’re waiting to be published.” So here I am, typing away at a Starbucks to post this first blog, and there you are, reading this from wherever you are. It’s weird to think about how I’m adding my voice to the continuous void of the internet–now an AI slop dumpster fire. Why does my voice matter? Why would someone want to read a blog from a ghost behind a screen?
I would argue that the same questions can be brought back to reading a novel. What does this author have to say that’s so much more important than watching Survivor or watching Markiplier’s latest playthrough? Why do I want to ruin my sleep schedule by reading words from a person I never met? For me, it’s what those words inspire, create, and generate in my imagination. I want to see how the story plays out. I want to know what happens next. The author and I have built a trust system. If I read this book, I will be entertained.
I’m not saying you will get an epiphany for your latest novel or a better rebuttal for an argument over the dishes from this blog and website. Definitely not. You might not even be entertained. But I hope you come on my writing journey with me. Either start your own blog or start completing daily writing prompts.
We all have to start somewhere!
